Testosterone Levels and Overall
Health
Maintaining proper testosterone levels in the body is essential for maintaining good health and well-being. Testosterone is a steroid hormone needed to improve libido, strength, immune function, and protection against osteoporosis. In addition, this hormone supports the development of certain male characteristics such as hair patterns, muscles, and voice flexibility. Although testosterone is considered a male hormone, women also need a small amount of it to strengthen their muscles and bones. Generally, an adult male produces eight to ten times more testosterone than his female counterparts. Testosterone production in men increases below puberty. Normal testosterone levels are about 359 and 1230 nanograms. As people grow older, a decrease in testosterone production becomes apparent. This decrease results in lower sexual desire, constant tiredness, depression, and fatigue. In addition, very low levels of testosterone in men increase the risk of obesity and heart disease.
Low testosterone levels are caused by the inability of the testes to produce an adequate amount of testosterone. This development affects the entire body system and causes many physiologic, chemical, and hormonal changes. Age is not the only cause of decreased testosterone production. According to David Zava, PhD., President of ZRT Laboratory, the leading hormone research lab in the United States, many factors contribute to low testosterone levels. Natural toxins, chronic stress, and stress are some of the things that can cause the body to slow down testosterone production. Lifestyle can also be a factor in the decline in hormone production. Excessive drinking, lack of exercise, and unhealthy eating habits can damage the testicles and reduce testosterone production. Other reasons for the low production of this ingredient are high blood pressure, the use of anabolic steroids, prescription or over-the-counter medications, surgery, cancer, and diseases.
People can improve testosterone levels by changing their lifestyle, improving their diet, or by incorporating exercise programs into their daily lives. Exercise and other physical activities are proven to show a modest improvement in testosterone levels. However, these activities should be done appropriately to avoid over-training. Excessive training causes fatigue and reduces fertility, reducing sperm quality and quantity temporarily. This happens because the body literally “kills itself” during exercise to build and improve the body and needs to rest in order to get normal cell development. Excessive physical activity may reduce the level of hormones in the blood that affect sperm production. These sperm levels return to normal after about three days. They added that drinking coffee after a few hours of training may protect sperm quality due to the antioxidants found in caffeine.
If these fixes do not work, there are various options available to treat this deficiency. Common treatments include testosterone injections, patches, and pills. Many products such as herbal supplements and vitamin products that claim to improve hormone levels are available in the market. In addition to these drugs, alternative therapies can also be used to stimulate testosterone production. Body tissue development, bone growth, high energy levels, reduced irritability and anxiety are some of the benefits associated with testosterone replacement therapy.
Although low testosterone levels pose a significant risk to the well-being and health of many older men, treatment is not easy. Individuals are encouraged to consult a physician or other medical professional and to evaluate the benefits and risks of many low testosterone levels. Increasing testosterone levels in men is possible, but should only be done with the advice of a medical professional.
